Great book, stories of different women, each with her own story and drama。 Mothers, daughters, pupils, teachers, friends, lovers and lost families。 4。5* for me

It took me some time to get used to the style of writing (no punctuations!), but I'm glad that I did because the book contains very real stories told by diverse black British women throughout the generations that need to be heard。 I'm glad I met these characters。 It took me some time to get used to the style of writing (no punctuations!), but I'm glad that I did because the book contains very real stories told by diverse black British women throughout the generations that need to be heard。 I'm glad I met these characters。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 A very clever author who winds her short stories together。

Livia Jobson

DNF。 Got to the third of the book。 It is not for me right now。 Too many triggers to go on。

Paige

This was a little bit of a slog for me since the writing style wasn’t my usual but I really enjoyed all of the characters’ stories and getting to see how they intersected。 Some I wished I could have spent more time with (Dominique, Hattie, Carole) and others I didn’t connect with as much。

Jenny

Well writen descriptive characters, unusual way of driving plot from multiple character viewpoints。 Well concluded。 Tackled lots of issues that have impacted women in recent decades。

Francesca Brilli

Loved it。 I really enjoyed that there were sections told from different perspectives, and how it covered so many individual stories。

Rhonda

With so many fantastic books available, I cannot understand how this book is so popular。 Good books are waiting, this just isn’t one of them。

DNF because Iloved the idea of the book and was up for some great stories but found I couldn't connect with any of the characters/ felt bad because I didnt like them。 It does an amazing job of highlighting different lifestyles but it didnt develop any of my empathy for any of them。 Nice epilogue ending - I was reading 1000 ships at the same time and empathised more with mythical goddesses and trojan women more than women who grew up in the same era as me。。。。 DNF because Iloved the idea of the book and was up for some great stories but found I couldn't connect with any of the characters/ felt bad because I didnt like them。 It does an amazing job of highlighting different lifestyles but it didnt develop any of my empathy for any of them。 Nice epilogue ending - I was reading 1000 ships at the same time and empathised more with mythical goddesses and trojan women more than women who grew up in the same era as me。。。。 。。。more

Truly excellent。 I love a journey through vignettes, and the characters are so fully realized。 I really enjoyed teasing apart the likeable and unlikeable elements in each of the personalities and perspectives we got throughout the course of the text, and recommended it to my housemate when I was almost finished (it passes their requirement of queer folk being involved)。

I didn't like the fact there was very limited punctuation, so that it sometimes felt more like reading a shopping list than a novel。 In fact there was no obvious story just 12 women's stories, sometimes with a tenuous link。 I constantly felt the author was shouting at me through some of the charcters and was trying to make a point but all the slang etc meant I didn't understand half what was said。 There were also too many characters and I became bored with them。 Saying that it was still pretty e I didn't like the fact there was very limited punctuation, so that it sometimes felt more like reading a shopping list than a novel。 In fact there was no obvious story just 12 women's stories, sometimes with a tenuous link。 I constantly felt the author was shouting at me through some of the charcters and was trying to make a point but all the slang etc meant I didn't understand half what was said。 There were also too many characters and I became bored with them。 Saying that it was still pretty easy to read。 。。。more

This book is an intricate character map explored by honesty and incredible writing。 The writing was definitely my favorite part; it was so easy to understand。 I felt like I was talking to my friends。 Meaning it wavered on the scale of intense and soul-searching to distracted and humorous。 It made *some* of these characters incredibly relatable。Please keep in mind some trigger warnings which include: abuse, gaslighting, harassment, assault, and there was a graphic depiction of r*pe。 (Please, plea This book is an intricate character map explored by honesty and incredible writing。 The writing was definitely my favorite part; it was so easy to understand。 I felt like I was talking to my friends。 Meaning it wavered on the scale of intense and soul-searching to distracted and humorous。 It made *some* of these characters incredibly relatable。Please keep in mind some trigger warnings which include: abuse, gaslighting, harassment, assault, and there was a graphic depiction of r*pe。 (Please, please do you research!)This book is built by chapters and each character has a handful of chapters dedicated to their experiences。 This meant that sometimes I felt a characters story had a abrupt ending。 For the characters that didn't get a resonating conclusion, or a more finalized wrap up, I found I didn't remember them as clearly。 I think that just had to do with me as a reader tho idk。 In a similar vein, all of these character are intertwined with each other。 So, given what I just said, it was hard to follow all the relationships with these characters。 But, being as I read this 2 years after it was published, there were plenty of online resources to help me navigate all these relationships。 I found a character map that was really helpful。If you are looking for a multi-generational study of relationship, desire, and doubt this book is for you!! 。。。more

I wanted to love this book, truly I did, and it won the Pulitzer, so I expected to, and the topic is incredibly important -- so why did it feel like such a chore? For starters, it is a stream of consciousness book: barely any punctuation, capitalization limited to proper nouns, text formatting such that understanding where paragraphs start and stop is a chore。 Secondly, it is one of those books where each chapter is a new person's life story, and each new person is part of the large ecosystem of I wanted to love this book, truly I did, and it won the Pulitzer, so I expected to, and the topic is incredibly important -- so why did it feel like such a chore? For starters, it is a stream of consciousness book: barely any punctuation, capitalization limited to proper nouns, text formatting such that understanding where paragraphs start and stop is a chore。 Secondly, it is one of those books where each chapter is a new person's life story, and each new person is part of the large ecosystem of the others, but there are so many faces and names and backstories that it is hard to keep everyone straight (especially when you are a before-bed reader。) I can enjoy books in those styles (though not my preference), but the two combined asks too much of the reader。 Ultimately, this is a story of how hard it is to be at the fringes of society, most especially if you are intersectional。 We need these stories -- we need to deeply understand our sisters and brothers who are from different backgrounds, origins, sexualities, and genders。 This information is just too important to the world to write it in an affected artsy-fartsy way。 Perhaps I am just not a nuanced enough reader to appreciate it, but good god, if someone who reads like I do finds it annoying, the people that need desperately to read this are unlikely to persist。 I know, I know -- authors write for themselves and not for us, but this feels like a tremendous missed opportunity to move society forward, and really, are proper sentences really that hard? I guess it's the difference between communication and art, but -- in my opinion -- art is at its best when it moves us (and not to write cranky reviews。) 。。。more

Captivating, real, heartbreaking, funny, and smart。 I don’t often read books in this style, meandering vignettes of characters whose strength of personality keeps you reading。。。 but I enjoyed this one。 A lot! The writing is contemporary and vivid, and the interplay between seemingly distant lives is delightful, especially as it all comes together full circle。 Would recommend。

Beautiful, intersectional and important。 I would love separate and whole detailed chronicles for each of the people in this story, more than the immense and detailed chronologies we got in the book。

I found the first third-ish to be a bit slow, but my interest started to get more peeked by Bummi’s section。 This book was never boring, but I found myself。。。waiting。 For what, I’m still not sure。But finally something clicked and the wait was over and I found myself bursting with anticipation to see how the next stories were related to the previous。 All of the characters’ unique stories are intricately woven together and the ending is really beautiful。 This book is a triumph of storytelling。 I f I found the first third-ish to be a bit slow, but my interest started to get more peeked by Bummi’s section。 This book was never boring, but I found myself。。。waiting。 For what, I’m still not sure。But finally something clicked and the wait was over and I found myself bursting with anticipation to see how the next stories were related to the previous。 All of the characters’ unique stories are intricately woven together and the ending is really beautiful。 This book is a triumph of storytelling。 I feel like I know so much about the lives of each of these characters that there is no way they aren’t real。 I loved some。 I loathed some。 I pitied some。 I cheered some on。 But they were all fantastically written。 I’ll be thinking about this book for awhile。 。。。more
